We cannot tell for certain whether a mass is cancerous merely by looking at it; therefore, we suggest that masses be sent out to a pathologist for evaluation. The pathologist will take extremely thin sections (usually only 1 or 2 cell layers thick) of the tissue and look at them under a microscope. Based on the types of cells that are present, the pathologist can tell us such things as to whether the mass is malignant, possible causes of the mass, if it appears that we left behind any residual tissue that needs removal, what if any expected side effects may be associated with the masses, and give us information as to whether further treatment is necessary.

There is an additional fee for submission of the mass(es) to a pathologist.
The lab biopsy fee is $155 for one mass, $229.50 for 2 masses, or $309.50 for 3 masses. An estimate can be prepared for 4 or more masses. Masses of mammary chains are $265. Masses requiring decalcification (such as digits and bone biopsies) may incur modest additional fees.*
